Multi- Stakeholder Consultation on Disaster Preparedness and DRR in Surendranagar

The Surendranagar district-level consultation on Disaster Preparedness and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) brought together 54 individuals from various government sectors and non-profit organizations with hands-on experience in emergency interventions. The diverse representation included members from Health, Police, Fire, Gram Panchayats, Urban Development, and the Revenue Department. Additionally, members from IAG Gujarat, such as SAFAR, AKSPI-Sayla, and Paryavaran Vikas Kendra-Rajkot, were also present.

 

The consultation aimed to comprehensively understand Surendranagar’s risk profile, discuss disaster preparedness measures, and identify challenges faced during emergencies.

The event commenced with Mr. Nilesh Parmar, DPO Surendranagar, sharing insights into the region’s risk profile, emphasizing multi-hazards like floods, cyclones, fire, earthquake, and epidemics. The District Collector highlighted the positive impact of collaborative efforts between departments and local communities during emergencies, fostering a bottom-up approach in disaster management.

Collaborative strategies for emergency interventions took center stage, emphasizing the importance of sharing best practices and coordinating efforts for a comprehensive approach. Discussions delved into challenges faced by government sectors during emergencies, leading to proposed solutions through group discussions. Key outcomes include proposed workshops, the establishment of inter-sectoral coordination mechanisms, capacity-building programs, and regular review meetings to enhance disaster resilience in the community. The consultation marks a significant step toward building a resilient community through collaboration and informed strategies for effective disaster management in Surendranagar.
