State level workshop on Nutrition during calamities and climate change context

The workshop, organized by UNICEF and IAG Gujarat, convened 95 participants, including government officials, to address challenges related to humanitarian situations, nutrition during crises, and climate change effects. The event aimed to enhance understanding of key topics like the ‘Sendai Framework,’ ‘Core Commitment for Children,’ and ‘Accountability to Affected Population’ for effective emergency responses. Kavita Sharma of UNICEF inaugurated the workshop, followed by Kirit Parmar of IAG Gujarat outlining their role. Distinguished guests included K. K. Nirala, IAS Secretary, WCD Gandhinagar; Prashant Dash, CFO, UNICEF Gandhinagar; Rafi Malek, Centre for Development, Ahmedabad; Sourav Bhattacharjee, Nutrition Specialist, UNICEF Bhubaneswar, Odisha; Nageshwar Patidar, WASH Specialist, UNICEF, Gandhinagar; and Kavita Sharma, Nutrition Specialist, UNICEF Gandhinagar.

Prashant Dash highlighted the workshop’s objectives, linking climate change to increased cyclone risks in Gujarat. Shri KK Nirala stressed nutrition challenges during emergencies, advocating for coordination and communication. The technical session, led by Mahendra Rajaram, focused on global and national standards for emergency preparedness. Other sessions covered gender inclusivity, age-specific nutrition, emergency relief coordination, food and nutrition security in climate change, education during emergencies, and social protection. The session also stressed on culturally relevant nutrition support for effective disaster assistance.

 

The workshop achieved its objectives, emphasizing unity and collaboration. Kirit Parmar expressed gratitude to participants, UNICEF, and guests, highlighting key takeaways of knowledge on disaster management and nutrition, and a commitment to resilience in uncertain times. Overall, the workshop provided comprehensive insights into disaster management strategies, emphasizing the interconnectedness of nutrition, emergency response, and sustainable development.
